Wow...that was some break we took and we needed it!!!! Here is a little recap of last nights NBA Draft.

ACC has 7 first-rounders
Duke wing Gerald Henderson was the first of seven conference players taken in the first round. He was chosen 12th overall by the Charlotte Bobcats. North Carolina forward Tyler Hansbrough went 13th, the first of four Heels to go in the draft.

NBA draft: Pick-by-pick analysis
As expected, the Los Angeles Clippers took Oklahoma's Blake Griffin (above) with the first overall pick in the NBA draft Thursday night. Memphis selected Connecticut's Hasheem Thabeet with the second pick and Oklahoma City took Arizona State's James Harden at No. 3. In the second round, two players with local ties -- Georgetown's DaJuan Summers (McDonogh) and Miami's Jack McClinton (Calvert Hall) were picked by Detroit and San Antonio, respectively

I hadn't seen this story regarding Clemson running back C.J. Spiller's decision to stay at Clemson for his senior year. I'm a sports nut....follow the blogs and ledes all day long and half into the night and this escaped me. Let's get the Daily Roundup out of the way so I can get to the meat of my thoughts:

Wake lost on Wednesday.

Carolina beat Clemson at home again.

Miami beat Florida State, too.

Ok...now on to CJ Spiller.

Some how, some way, I missed the fact that a kid from a single parent home, a fiscally challenged background, a first round draft choice from a major BCS conference and football crazy school, decided to forego millions and return for his senior year. I missed the story of a young black male defying the stereotype, putting his trust in his considerable faith, ignoring his own mother's pleadings and, instead, returning to school to graduate and "finish" what he started.

The right or wrong of that decision doesn’t move me one way or the other. What troubles me to some extent is why his decision is not being celebrated in the same way as other similarly situated student athletes.

Perhaps I'm overstating the matter.

Perhaps Spiller’s decision shouldn't be celebrated the way the return of Hansbrough, Tebow, McCoy, Duncan (Tim), Battier (or every Duke Senior with a hint of NBA potential) seemed to be. Perhaps Spiller's return is not as news worthy because he plays for the Tigers. Clemson is a team that, no doubt, has underachieved and, since the 1980's, no longer garners the national attention of these other programs. Although very solid academically and on the assent among public schools, the school does not enjoy the total academic/athletic standing of the aforementioned universities.

On second thought isn't that exactly why we should be celebrating this kid more?

Yes, all of the aforementioned players gave up millions to return to school. However, they were all walking back into situations where a National Championship and individual national glory was highly possible if not probable. While what I'm about to say won't make the Clemson fans happy, I believe it to be a fact of life for the near future in TigerLand and across the ACC: there will be no national title for C.J. (or any other ACC player for that matter) to play for next year (I don't care what the pundits are saying about Virginia Tech for next season. One loss to a UNC, Wake, or Maryland and they're done for).

There are a few factors that lead me to this conclusion regarding Clemson:

(1) Articulated and exercised higher academic standards across the school and the President's drive for Clemson to be recognized among the top 25 public institutions in the country. Unfortunately it’s hard to be serious about both and win. Florida is not serious about stretching academic integrity across the University and into athletics (Nor is UNC Football/Basketball within the context of the more stringent academic requirements of the ACC vs. SEC, for that matter). President Barker is! Clemson fans should be proud of that distinction and work within those lines in pursuit of football greatness. Schools like Michigan, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Duke have long had sterling academic reps and are, therefore, afforded leeway by the general public to "dip" and take some kids that Clemson might not. Barker's goal is long term and, I believe, the right path. Give it time, Tigers;

(2) Tommy Bowden's inability to win a less than daunting ACC (ever);

(3) The awakening of Wake Forest and North Carolina; and

(4) The surprising arrival (i.e. winning ways) of Boston College and consistency (i.e. extending their ability to win) of Virginia Tech.

This combination has all but insured that Clemson (nor any other school in the ACC save Miami and Florida State assuming that they can ever stabilize coaching, recruiting and get the Florida Gators off their schedule's) will have no more than a puncher's chance, year to year, to win it all.

That was not the case for Hansbrough at North Carolina.
That was not the case for Tebow at Florida.
That was not the case for Duncan at Wake.
That was not the case for McCoy at Texas.

CJ Spiller has deferred millions to return to a Clemson team that may....MAY...finally play for the ACC Championship next year...perhaps!!! Why is he not being hailed as the ultimate God fearing, Clemson loving, team player?

CJ Spiller is a Dean's List Student (and I'm not talking about a one semester wonder kind of kid), just like Tim Tebow (the first Gator to make first team Academic All American since 1998....that failure by Florida is a whole different story for another day) and three time Academic All Big 12 Texas QB Colt McCoy (I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong). If Duncan or Tyler Hansbrough were academes on top of being God's Gift to their sport I'm SURE the collective galaxy would know about it.

CJ Spiller is by all accounts a God fearing man, no less than Tim Tebow. You would think Tebow had the market cornered on religion among young athletes. As a result of his faith Spiller even went against the wishes of a mother who, no doubt, wants the best for her son. She wants him to live his dreams. Yet it is inescapable that he deferred the financial rescue of a mother who has suffered and sacrificed for him his entire life. Perhaps she was simply asking C. J. to relieve her of this burden. He denied her this exit with an eye to a higher, nobler calling: Setting the ultimate example for his young son! The pain and glory of that decision cannot be underestimated.

Yes, unlike the other players mentioned C.J. Spiller is also an active and engaged father. Questions can certainly be raised regarding the out of wedlock birth. None can be raised with regard to Spiller's dedication to trying to be a great roll model for his child. There are those who would ridicule C.J. Spiller for having a child out of wedlock. I would only ask that they reflect on our last election and the familial realities that touch every household of every race, rich and poor. If as a nation we can give a pass to a Vice Presidential candidate who is currently handling a similar challenge with her daughter, we should certainly be able to give C.J. Spiller the benefit of the doubt.

While the young Bristol Palin may reap financial gain as a result of the well earned and deserved position/respect/fame of her mother, C.J. Spiller will see no such windfall for pictures of his son. He will not seek instant riches as a result of his god given ability. He will return to play ball, set an example, and be loyal to the school that stuck with him.

None of the aforementioned athletes have experienced this pressure as far as I know.

But, perhaps I'm overstating the matter.....or perhaps I've hit the nail on the head: There remains a socioeconomic, cultural and institutional double standard that simply cannot be ignored. CJ Spiller has seen more poverty and familial challenge than Colt McCoy, returned to school for less than Tyler Hansbrough and prayed just as hard as Tim Tebow. He is accomplished in the class room. He is a dedicated father. Despite these facts C.J. Spiller only earns a scant whisper from the national talking heads.

Shame on them...shame on them all.

C.J. Spiller is exactly what America is all about. He is what was intended when the term "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" was coined many decades ago. Though his boots were shabby he has demonstrated an unwavering focus on his faith, family values, academic accomplishment and commitment to team. He has done this without an eye to any national title or individual honor for next season.

I wonder if Tebow or Hansbrough would have returned if their respective teams weren't deemed overwhelming favorites to win a national championship? Would Duke have returned all of those players with NBA talent (don't listen to the nonsense about Duke players not being NBA caliber) had they not been contending for conference and national titles every year? I wonder if Colt McCoy would have returned but for the slap in the face his Longhorns received this year and their extreme promise for next season?

C.J. Spiller has no such luxury.

He instead chooses to walk through the valley with only his faith to guide him. Perhaps he makes it to the other side and earns his millions. Perhaps he gets, instead, a career ending injury and earns a degree from Clemson University. Either way he will have done so with no promise of glory or greatness. He will have done so with no media blitz promoting his faith and charity. And, yet, he will be rich beyond his wildest dreams and will have made a mother, son, and University proud.

Perhaps I'm overstating this, but I don't think so: C.J. Spiller for the All-"Man up" version of the Heisman.
